〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Shouta Aizawa
CHARACTER AGE: 31
SERIES: My Hero Academia
CHRONOLOGY: Chapter 192ish, after returning to UA with Shouto Todoroki
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Maurtia Falls #007 with Hizashi, please!

BACKGROUND: Fandom wiki for the series and for Shouta in particular. If you'd like me to elaborate, please let me know!

PERSONALITY:
Shouta Aizawa is more or less the definition of the adage 'don't judge a book by its cover.' He's disheveled, unkempt, usually looks as though he hasn't slept or changed clothes in a week, and carries his sleeping bag into the classroom where he teaches for regular naps. But the outward appearance of the man has very little to do with the man he is inside, or the hero he is when he's working. Beneath the tired, almost haggard exterior is a man who is fiercely devoted to helping people, with a very strong sense of right and wrong that has very little to do with what is legal or not--or what's popular. He's got very strong feelings about how commercialized being a hero is these days, and doesn't make his disdain for those who are popular or good at working a crowd or the press a secret. It can definitely make him a little judgmental, especially in the case of All Might, the world's number one hero, whom he gives an especial amount of grief when he starts teaching at UA himself. The attention All Might brings to the school is an unnecessary distraction, he thinks, not to mention the danger it could put every student at the school in. In fact, despite he himself being the definition of above adage, he's very quick to judge, and usually to judge negatively, though he claims it's simply him observing and coming to a rational conclusion. Above all else, he claims to be a man who lives entirely by the law of rationality, making the logical decision in all things, and his perceptive abilities and quick mind make it easy for him to react on the fly, but making the logical decision isn't always the correct decision, and his own emotions and history definitely play into his choices and actions more than he wants to admit.

Shouta experienced personal loss for the first time at a young age, watching one of his best friends die at age 17 during their hero work study program while fighting a villain. It's something that's stayed with him for the last 14 years of his life, and has shaped much of the man he's become. The world is a dangerous place, especially their world, with its superpowers and commercialized heroes and villains who aren't afraid to take a life. It isn't like comic books where everyone comes through with nothing more than a scar and a story, or where the dead can be resurrected by a magical macguffin. Death is real and permanent, and as a result of his harsh education in this regard, he's developed quite a reputation as a teacher who is incredibly hard on his students. After all, he's actually expelled an entire class before--though whenever he expels a student, he always quietly re-enrolls them immediately afterwards. The point he's always trying to make is that life is brutal and you don't get any takebacks in the real world, and the education young heroes receive at UA should reflect that. He doesn't believe in coddling, and is always brutally honest in his assessments. Perhaps a little too brutally honest, some might say; after all, they're still children, fifteen or sixteen at most. If one were to see the way he treated Midoriya during their very first class together, blocking his quirk and giving him a scathing speech about how he doesn't belong here if he can't use his quirk without hurting himself, many would think he takes it way too far. But given that Oboro was only seventeen when he died, he feels no age is too young to learn how to take this profession they've chosen to pursue seriously. If he gets a student that he feels is a danger to themselves or others, he won't play a part in sending them out to die, and he'll say as much to anyone.

That being said, while he is brutally honest, that doesn't mean he's incapable of praise. In fact, he's incredibly proud of his entire class and the way they've carried themselves in the months he's had them so far, with all the villain attacks and intense training they've undergone. He doesn't give out praise lightly but when one of them has earned it, he'll say so. He can be encouraging; after all, he wants his kids to succeed, to survive, and he does what he can to not only see their weak points but find ways to help them overcome them, as seen in the way he encourages Yaoyorozu to take the lead during the team exercise with Todoroki. Shouta sees how much she doubts herself, and sets up the exercise in such a way that she manages to take some small steps towards reclaiming her confidence in herself, her tactical ability, and her skills as a young hero. It's better, after all, if they see what they can truly do, instead of just hearing it.

Shouta is very much a man of actions over words, and has trouble talking about his feelings, considering them to be unimportant, inconvenient, and/or irrelevant depending on the day and the mood he's in. One might almost consider this ironic, given his close friendship with his fellow teacher Hizashi, otherwise known as Present Mic. In fact, much of this friendship is highly unlikely, especially from an outside perspective, given Shouta's loathing for the press and those who cater to it, and Present Mic's status as a popular radio host. Hizashi is loud where Shouta is quiet, outgoing where the other man is introverted, and often Shouta seems more irritated by the other man than anything else. But honestly, Hizashi serves as a good foil as well as a good friend, as does Nemuri/Midnight, by pushing Shouta and not letting him withdraw. They've been that way ever since they were in school together, and somehow Hizashi's always known just how to get through his walls. The only other person he was that close with was Oboro; the three of them were nearly inseparable in school, and Hizashi is the only other person who really truly understands the loss he still feels. Shouta is, after all, very much a passionate person with deep feelings, and that's a large part of why he represses those emotions so strongly. He will stand up for what he believes is right, and has no trouble at all in calling out what he sees as bad or poorly thought-out decisions, especially by people in power.

For all that he claims to live a life based strictly on rationality, he's very passionate about the things he believes in, especially the responsibility that those who have power owe to those who do not. Being a hero is something he takes seriously, but so is being a teacher, and being a guardian. Every choice you make affects the life of someone else, and while it might be utterly irrational and he'd deny it if confronted, there is still a part of him that believes maybe if he can manage to make all the right choices, to be the best he can as both a teacher and as a hero, if he can just do enough, that somehow, in some small way, it'll help to make up for what he feels was his personal lapse that resulted in the death of his friend.

POWER:

Erasure
Shouta's main ability is called Erasure. He is able to cancel out another person's abilities/powers just by looking at them. There are a few caveats; it doesn't work on things like power suits or mechanically enhanced limbs, and it doesn't work on powers that are part of the other person's inherent physiology. For example: if a person can create fire, Erasure would block that ability, and they would not be able to create fire for the duration. If a person were made of fire, on the other hand, Erasure would have no effect. Another example: if Character A can turn into a giant eldritch horror, Erasure works. If they are a giant eldritch horror, it won't.
Erasure only lasts as long as Shouta doesn't blink and can maintain line of sight. When his eyes are closed or he can't see his target for any other reason, it stops working. (It also gives him killer dry eye, and makes his hair do this neat anime-bullshit-floaty-thing.) As a result, it's used most effectively in conjunction with his martial arts experience and Capture Cloth, which brings us to power 2, brand new for MoM!

Stolakinesis
What in the fresh hell is stolakinesis, you may ask yourself, and that is an incredibly valid question since I just made the word up. This ability lets Shouta control fabric as though it is one of his limbs--but it only works if the fabric in question is a scarf. What kind of scarf? Doesn't matter. Silk, wool, tasseled, bedazzled, knitted, it just has to be a scarf. If you want me to put more limits on this one, I'm happy to! Just let me know. It's mostly for comedic value, and also meant to enhance his already-impressive martial arts style that uses a scarf to immobilize and/or snare his opponents. (The etymology is 'stole' (greek for cloth/garment/equipment) + 'kinesis' (greek, movement) for any interested parties.)

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[When the broadcast starts, the screen is showing a face that viewers may or may not recognize: a man somewhere between 25 and 40, red-eyed and tired-looking, with dark disheveled hair and about two days' worth of stubbly facial hair. There's a scarf around his neck, or what looks like a scarf, which might be a little weird considering it's summer, but hey.]

So. I finally found out why strangers have been coming up to me going 'nya' and handing me cat toys.

[The camera angle shifts to show the side of a light post, with a very distinctive sticker plastered on the side of it. After a second of zooming, the camera pans back around to the man again.]

They're all over the city. Whoever put them up, if you come forward, I promise I'll make it quick and painless. If the rest of you know anything, let me know, and I'll make sure you don't meet the same fate.

[That's. Ominous? What's he gonna make quick and painless?? What fate??? One may never know--unless they, you know, come clean.]

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: TDM post here

FINAL NOTES: I'd like Aizawa to come in with his Capture Device (a very long scarf made of steel alloy and carbon nanofibers, as seen here) and goggles, also seen in the same image. Also his sleeping bag, if at all possible, but if not no worries! He'll find a new one.
